- CONCEPTS
- Growing up in Samoa in the 1920s
In the 1920s, according to research reports on Samoan society, children did not go to school. At a smaller age, they learnt things such as how to take care of children or do household work from older children and from adults. Both boys and girls used to do household work.
- Growing up male in Madhya Pradesh in the 1960s
From class 6 onwards, boys and girls went to separate schools. Girls school had a central courtyard where they played in total seclusion and safety from the outside world. The boys’ school had no such courtyard and their playground was just a big space attached to the school. The girls always went in groups because they also carried fears of being teased or attacked.
After reading the above two stories you will realise that there are many different ways of raising children. You would have also analysed that societies make clear distinctions between boys and girls.
- Valuing housework
The main responsibility for housework and care-giving tasks such as looking after the family lies with women. Yet the work that women do within the home is not recognised as work. It is also assumed that this work comes naturally to women. Therefore, women do not get paid for housework and society devalues this work.
- Lives of domestic workers
Housework involves many different tasks. A number of these tasks require heavy physical work. In both rural and urban areas:
- Women and girls fetch water
- Carry heavy head loads of firewood
- Perform tasks like washing clothes, cleaning, sweeping and picking uploads require bending, lifting and carrying
The work women do is hard and physically demanding. It’s very time consuming also. If you add up the housework and the work women do outside the home, you find that women spend much more time working than men and have much less time for themselves.
- Women’s work and equality
Equality is an important principle of the Indian Constitution which says that there should not be any discrimination based on sex. But in reality, inequality between the sexes exists. Therefore, it has to be dealt not just at the individual level or the family, but also by the government. Some of the actions taken by the government are as below:
- It has promoted Girl education
- The government has set up anganwadis or child-care centres in several villages in the country
- The government has passed laws that make it mandatory for organisations that have more than 30 women employees to provide crèche facilities

The player has to strategically navigate in such a way that all the steps of the process are successfully completed.
- How to design the game?
- Step I
In the game, you are a child who is charged with the responsibility of creating a world by your own with the help of two angels where there is equality for both boys and girls and can choose to live their lives with equal education, rights, equal division of labour etc. The importance of education has to be stressed by building more schools all over the country and also bringing in robots and other technologies to teach both boys and girls education and bring girls from their homes to schools.
Hint: You are in charge of building 10 schools for 100 children and an equal number of girls in each locality of the country have to come to the school. There are enemy organisations preventing the girls from coming to school, as they are being taken for household chores and cheap labour. The girls have to be rescued from these enemy organisations and put in schools. For each girl child rescued and put in schools, the gamer gains an appreciation note from the girl child as well as 10 points. There are 10 girl children that have to be rescued and put in schools and this level has to be completed within 20 minutes, or else the obstacles in rescuing the girl further gets harder by 70% every 5 minutes.
- Step II
The second level of the game involves making men and boys participate in equal division of labour. The men and boys have to be encouraged in doing household work by stressing the importance and have to immediately start carrying out the work.
Hint: For every man or boy who carries out housework, the gamer gains about 10 points. There are about 20 men/boys in the locality and you earn 200 points on convincing them about the importance of housework and making them do it and also keep them but, for every 5 minutes the men/ boys you will have to convince increases by 50% and you will start to gradually lose 5 points every 10 minutes and hence the second level of the game should be completed within 20 minutes.
- Step III
The final level of the game involves making companies provide equal number of jobs and opportunities to women.
Hint: 10 women from a locality have to get jobs with good salary in relation to the men and you will have to convince the organisations the importance of hiring women. On completion of all the three rounds, the gamer earns a total of 400 points and an honorary gold badge as well as the superpower to read and change people’s minds.
